Anyone Can Whistle

Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim’s musical fable, Anyone Can Whistle closed after just 9 performances on Broadway in the spring of 1964. In the decades since, this little-performed satire’s score has become an acclaimed part of Sondheim’s canon. Director Grace O’Keefe re-envisions the show’s final song, “With So Little To Be Sure Of” as a digital break up between two political revolutionaries who have different ideas about how to fix their broken society.

Grace directed the final song, ‘With So Little To Be Sure Of’, from Anyone Can Whistle for her Theatre Directing Master’s dissertation in order to examine how her mentor, Katie Mitchell’s method of direction could be adapted to direct a piece of musical theatre. Although she only directed a small section of the three-act play, Grace has plans to turn the infamously unsuccessful musical into a piece of digital theatre set in the year 2020.
